HEMP EMBASSY HEADLINES #655 | 15 MAY 2025

High Headliners!

The rain is incessant. We were lucky to have mostly sunshine on the MardiGrass weekend because now the blue sky moments are rare and the mud is thick everywhere. I nearly got bogged in my driveway today, seriously!

Talking of dirt, the New South Wales draft Hemp Industry Development Plan is exciting, with potentially huge growth opportunities for our farmers, our communities and our country, as Jeremy Buckingham says. He has some people in the Government who I believe now realise it makes sense to start genuinely supporting the hemp industry.

I always loved that early hippy saying, “We’ve discovered a plant that can save the world, the only problem is it’s illegal”. Here’s another one. “Anything that can be made from hydrocarbons can be made from carbohydrates” (Henry Ford). The potential to replace plastics is as real as hempcrete is a fire resistant building material perfect for Australia. We can’t keep on endlessly creating oceans of micro plastics, surely?

As well, hemp cleans up the soil (that’s why they planted it around Chernobyl) while needing less water and fertilisers than other crops for its super fast growing bio-mass. The Hemp Plan is looking for public comment, which closes next Monday, 19th May, so this is a reminder, hemp farmers and others, to have your say here!

Meanwhile they keep counting the Senate votes around the country, long into the night I imagine! Fiona is still a real chance in Victoria for the Legalise Cannabis Party I read from some experts, and Jason in Western Australia and Bee in Queensland are not out of the race either. It’s complicated, we wait at least another week.

Love to everyone!
