High Headliners!

We’ve had a week of sunshine in the Tweed Valley and the mud is finally starting to dry. Not so just a few hours south, where the massive flooding has clearly been devastating.

Meanwhile nothing stops the vote counting and buttons have been pushed across the country this week to make the final senate selections, and we missed out. It’s like we are hot on the heels of One Nation across the land, they have the fourth biggest vote and us the fifth. Our vote rose considerably in some states but fell in a couple of others since the last election, but we still fell well short, in most states, of getting someone in Canberra.

However, there is a lot to be positive about. The rise in the vote will get us some funding to go on with, and for me, the fact that the Labor Party and the Prime Minister, in particular, were happy to put us second or third in every state on their How-To-Vote cards is a huge positive. If that isn’t Labor saying we’re very supportive of legalising cannabis, then what is it? I’m hoping the PM will find time to look at actually saying it out loud in one way or another, soon. I wish he would have a Drug Summit in Canberra and let us review the whole drug war, it doesn’t seem to get questioned at all. Are we in for an endless unwinnable war against nature’s best medicinal plants?

I grew up in country Victoria and alcohol was the only mind altering substance I knew, and it was everywhere, at every social occasion. I had no idea at all about cannabis or indeed any other drugs other than aspirin! Sometimes I think I’m fortunate not to have discovered weed until I was in my twenties, letting my brain grow, as they say, though the gallons of alcohol that was poured down the hole under my nose must have done plenty of it’s own damage.

I’ve not drunk a lot of grog in the fifty years since then and lately don’t seem to drink at all, I just lost interest. I’ve noticed multiple stories in the Headlines over recent months regarding weed helping people to drink less and the New York Times story (below) shows considerably more people smoke pot now in America, on a daily basis, than drink alcohol.

I bet those numbers are changing in Australia too, especially with the younger generations. After four decades at ‘Nimbin University’, in this unique community with a high proportion of cannabis users, I’ve come to realise we have many alcoholics living here, but they smoke weed instead. We also have quite a few epileptics, but you wouldn’t know because they also smoke weed.

I’ve wondered more than once if England moved on legalising pot would we follow the ‘Mother Country’? But they’ve done nothing, until maybe now. The Mayor set up an independent London Drugs Commission, which after a year, has recommended partial decriminalisation of cannabis, no longer charging people for personal possession. The Commission stated policing pot is causing more harm than good, especially in the black communities. Hasn’t every inquiry for fifty years come up with similar statements? It remains a great challenge to get the authorities thinking about actually changing their attitudes to ‘drug’ use.

Love to everyone!

NSW Festival Strip Searches Class Action

The NSW Supreme Court hearing on Festival Strip Searches has exposed MAJOR failings.

  • NSW Police ADMITTED the strip search of lead plaintiff Raya Meredith was UNLAWFUL – after years of defending it!

  • Their defence? The ILLEGAL search was “objectively necessary”.

  • Merediths ordeal: asked to remove her tampon, male officer present while undressed, no privacy, no consent.

  • The 20-day trial? Ended in JUST 4 DAYS after police withdrew all 22 witnesses!

This class action represents over 3,000 people strip-searched at NSW music festivals since 2016. It highlights routine, invasive searches, often based on unreliable sniffer dog indications (drugs found only ~30% of the time). Were now awaiting Justice Yehia's final decision. This could be a LANDMARK moment for police accountability and your rights in NSW.
